You want to build or update your website, but you don't know where to start. Let us help you discover HTML and CSS, the basic technologies of the Internet. As our expertise is both technical and instructional, you'll not only learn the languages, but we'll also make it a point of honor for you to understand, in detail, the inner workings of your web pages. By the end of this course, you'll have a sufficiently detailed overview of how HTML 5 and CSS3 work to continue your discovery on your own.

During the first two days of this course, you'll build your first web page. On the first day, you'll write the HTML code, and on the second day, you'll write the CSS code. This first exercise will enable you to take your first steps in HTML and CSS, learning in detail how these two languages work.

On the third day, you'll write the code of a small multi-page website from start to finish. This second exercise will allow you to consolidate your basics and discover additional techniques, such as creating a link bar or generating gradients.

Prerequisites

This course is designed for beginners; no previous experience of HTML or CSS is required. All you need to get started is a working knowledge of your operating system (Mac or Windows) and some experience of the Internet as a user.

Course content

The content of these three days of training is based on the completion of two exercises. All the concepts covered are therefore immediately put into practice.

Day 1

  1. Discovering HTML
In this first chapter, you'll create your first small, valid HTML page. You'll learn about the basic concepts of HTML, such as the concept of tags, the need to use a code editor and some key best practices.
  2. Structuring text
In this chapter, you'll discover the HTML tags that enable you to structure text. In particular, you'll learn how to create paragraphs, use different levels of headings, as well as creating lists and links.
  3. Working with images
This chapter is dedicated to the various types of images you can insert on a web page. You'll learn how to choose the most appropriate image type depending on the situation (.gif, .jpg, .png, .svg). You'll also learn the inner working of the <img> tag.
  4. Structuring the web page
In this chapter, you'll write the full HTML code for a real web page. You'll take the opportunity to discover the structuring tags of HTML (<div>, <section>, <header>, <footer>, etc.).
  5. Introduction to CSS
This chapter introduces you to the CSS language, which you can use to format your website. You'll learn how to apply a style sheet to your web page and how HTML and CSS are linked.

Day 2

  1. CSS basics
In this chapter, we take a more in-depth look at the CSS language. In particular, you'll discover the workings of the main selectors and the cascading principle.
  2. Formatting text

  3. The CSS box model
It's time to move on to the layout of your site. To do this, you need to know in detail how the main properties of the CSS Box Model work. This is where you'll learn all about paddings, margins, borders and more.
  4. Finalizing your web page
Armed with your new knowledge, you'll finalize your first web page by applying the formatting and layout techniques you learned earlier. As an added bonus, you'll also learn the basics of CSS animations and transitions.

Day 3

  1. Integrating a Photoshop design
This chapter marks the start of the second exercise in the course. Starting with a Photoshop mock-up, you'll write the HTML and CSS code corresponding to the design. You'll take the opportunity to discover new techniques and properties, such as how to center a container in the window, or how to generate color gradients.
  2. Creating a link bar
This chapter is entirely devoted to the creation of a link bar in both HTML and CSS. You'll discover how to make your navigation easy on the eye, simple to use and accessible to the disabled.
  3. Including external elements
In this chapter, you'll learn how to include additional multimedia content such as videos and audio files. You'll also learn how to use the <iframe> tag to incorporate content from other sites (such as YouTube videos, Google Maps or Twitter feeds) into your web pages.
